FERENCIEK TEMPLOM (FRANCISCAN CHURCH)

Dating as far back as the 13th century is the rather inconspicuous yet historically rich Franciscan Church (V. Ferenciek tere, mass Mon.-Sat. 6am, 8am, 10am, 11am, and 6:30pm, Sun. 6am and every hour until noon, 5pm, 6:30pm, and 8pm). It was built in 1250 in the Gothic style by Béla IV, a member of the third Franciscan order who is widely regarded as Hungary’s second founder. Burned to the ground after the Turkish victory at the Battle of Mohacs in 1526, it was used as a place of Muslim worship until being returned to the Franciscans in 1690 by Emperor Leopold I. It was rebuilt in its current baroque style during the Counter-Reformation. Life was good for the Franciscan brothers until 1950, when the church was outlawed by the Communist regime. Forty years of imposed exile passed before the church and friary were opened once again on September 1, 1990. The church’s frescoes are the work of Károly Lotz and Vilmos Tardos Krenner, and its baroque high altar and magnificent statues are worth close inspection. On the Kossuth Lajos Street side of the church, you’ll find a touching relief commemorating Miklos Weselenyi’s heroic attempts during the tragic Danube flood of 1838, when the river’s raging waters claimed the lives of over 400 people.
